FLAS Fellowships are administered by the University of Illinois National Resource Centers and are awarded competitively through an annual competition to support graduate and undergraduate study in modern foreign languages in combination with area studies, international studies, or international or area aspects of professional studies. REEEC FLAS fellowships may be used for the study of a language of Russia, Eastern Europe, or the post-Soviet successor states; refer to the Illinois FLAS website for full details on eligibility and requirements and to access the application portal.

Students in the M.A. program who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to compete for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships offered under the Higher Education Act, Title VI, US Department of Education. Awards will be given for interdisciplinary language and area studies, including the study of Russian or other languages of Eastern Europe and the former USSR. FLAS Fellowships provide a tuition and fee waiver, and a stipend.

Eligible Languages

Summer 2025: Bosnian-Serbian-Croatian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian.

Academic Year 2025-2026: Bosnian-Serbian-Croatian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian.
